Larry Johnson Jr. has been named president of Bronx Community College. He assumed his new role on July 14.
A campus of the City University of New York system, Bronx Community College enrolls nearly 6,500 students, 27 percent of whom are Black.
For the past four years, Dr. Johnson has served as president of CUNY’s Guttman Community College. During his tenure, the community college substantially increased student enrollment, launched new certificate and degree programs, and established a Career Innovation Hub to create professional development opportunities for students.
Prior to Guttman, Dr. Johnson served as the first Black president of Phoenix College in Arizona. Earlier in his career, he held key academic and administrative roles with Georgia Piedmont Technical College, Broward College in Florida, and St. Louis Community College in Missouri, where he was provost and chief academic officer.
“It is an honor to be named the seventh president of Bronx Community College,” said Dr. Johnson. “With its distinguished history and enduring commitment to educational equity, BCC serves as a vital institution of social mobility, advancing the intellectual and professional aspirations of students across generations.”
Dr. Johnson received his bachelor’s degree in English literature from Florida A&M University, a master’s degree in humanities from Florida State University, and a doctorate in humanities and English literature from Clark Atlanta University in Georgia.
