Here is this week’s news of grants or gifts to historically Black colleges and universities or for programs of particular interest to African Americans in higher education.
Grambling State University in Louisiana has received a $899,647 grant from the U.S. Department of Education’s Basic Needs for Postsecondary Students Program for the HBCU’s Tiger Living Initiative for Fundamental Thriving (L.I.F.T.) project. The initiative will support over 2,500 students through a comprehensive approach that leverages public benefit programs, creates a campus-wide mental health strategy, and addresses students’ social, emotional, and academic needs.
Fayetteville State University in North Carolina has received a $900,000 investment from Cape Fear Valley Health to support the construction and programming of the HBCU’s new Student Health and Wellness Center. The state-of-the-art facility will cover 24,631 square feet and feature a variety of health services, including a fitness center, wellness offices, a full-serve pharmacy, physicians offices, and dedicated spaces for health education programs.
The Patuxent Environment and Aquatic Research Laboratory at Morgan State University in Baltimore, Maryland, has received a $500,000 grant from the National Oceanic and Atmosphere Administration and a $75,000 grant from the Maryland Department of Natural Resources to support research on the impact of blue catfish, an invasive species throughout the Chesapeake Bay system. Through the new funding, scholars at the HBCU will gather relevant data, create a shared framework of management strategies, and promote a unified understanding of best practices for managing blue catfish.
