Five HBCUs to Participate in Campus Sustainability Pilot Program

Beginning in the upcoming spring 2026 semester, Clark Atlanta University, Morgan State University, Spelman College, Texas Southern University, and Xavier University of Louisiana will participate in a new program to improve sustainability practices on HBCU campuses and train the next generation of leaders in clean energy.

The Top-Ranked HBCUs According to U.S. News and World Report

For the nineteenth consecutive year, U.S. News and World Report has named Spelman College in Atlanta the best HBCU in the country. Howard University was second, Morehouse College was third, Tuskegee University was fourth, and Florida A&M University was fifth. These five institutions have topped the magazine's annual list for three years in a row.

Morgan State University is the First HBCU to Receive Accreditation From the International Dyslexia Association

Achieving this milestone means Morgan State's bachelor's degree in elementary education meets the International Dyslexia Association's standards for effectively preparing teachers to support structured literacy, prevent reading failure, and provide effective interventions for students with dyslexia and other reading-related challenges.

In Memoriam: Earl S. Richardson, 1943-2025

Dr. Richardson was president of Morgan State University in Baltimore from 1984 to 2010. He led the university through a period of significant growth, while advocating for HBCU education and criticizing the state of Maryland's historic underfunding of its four HBCUs.

Although no HBCUs were included in a new LinkedIn report regarding the top colleges for alumni career outcomes, the networking website released a supplemental ranking list of the top HBCUs for long-term career success, with Howard University, Morehouse College, and Spelman College receiving the best evaluations.

Study Examines the Opportunities for Achieving R1 Research Classifications at HBCUs

This year, the qualifications for achieving the R1 Carnegie Classification were simplified. Now, institutions must simply award a minimum of 70 doctorates and spend at least $50 million on research per year. These updated metrics have the potential to increase the number of HBCUs with R1 status.
