Racist Graffiti Found on Meharry Medical College’s Campus

Meharry Medical College, one of four historically Black medical schools in the country, recently experienced a nonviolent hate crime, according to a report from WPLN.

On a remote wall in Nashville’s Albion Street parking garage, a still unidentified culprit wrote “[N-words] should die.” The garage also houses parking for Nashville General Hospital and a VA clinic.

“We do not tolerate hate and will fiercely defend the welfare and dignity of our community,” said Meharry Medical College President James Hildreth. “This abhorrent act will not shake who we are — and have been — for almost 150 years.”

Delishia Porterfield, an at-large member of the Nashville Metro Council, said in a statement, “Let me be clear: We will not tolerate hate in any form. Racial threats, whether expressed through words or actions, are a direct attack not just on individuals, but on the values of dignity, inclusion, and respect that we hold as a city. Words are also violence – and they leave lasting scars.

She continued, “I urge law enforcement to treat this act with the seriousness it deserves, and I call on all residents to stand united in rejecting racism, bigotry, and intimidation. We will not be silent. We will not back down. And we will continue to build a city that is safe, just, and welcoming for all.”

This incident at Meharry follows a recent series of threats directed at at least six other HBCUs, causing the institutions to cancel classes and implement campus lockdowns.

  1. Come on Meharry Medical College, you’re in racist a*s Nashville, TN meaning that you shouldn’t even be remotely surprised to such explicit vitriolic language. Unfortunately, too many of you so-called Black establishment class have become comfortable in not fully recognizing the White American racist landscape. As a result, your lackadaisical and even whimsical approach to this American cancer called RACISM has shaken your ego and spirits. What Meharry Medical College should be asking itself is why it’s not the damn leader in consistently addressing and solving healthcare issues in the native born Black American community.

    • I hope you’re doing something to be helpful in some aspect of human society – something other than being insulting and disrespectful

      • Hey Addie,

Your dimwitted comment is indicative of being either an old establishment so-called Black American or a Third World African or Caribbean immigrant. Have you heard of the Constitution? According to the 1st Amendment, I have the RIGHT to express myself any way I want even if misinformed and politically correct people like you disagree. For the record, my comment was neither “insulting or disrespectful” and simply the truth that somehow hurts your fragile ego. Grow up and deal with the truth. Time for you to make some biscuits or Jerk chicken.
