A shooting broke out during a homecoming weekend celebration at Lincoln University of Pennsylvania on October 25, according to a report from NBC Philadelphia.
One person, 20-year-old Jujuan Jeffers of Delaware, was killed and six more people were wounded during the incident that occurred outside the historically Black university’s International Cultural Center. The six wounded individuals, all between the ages of 20 and 25, are expected to survive. The victims include one current Lincoln University student and one alum. The other four injured individuals and Jeffers have no direct ties to the university.
A suspect has been taken into custody by local authorities and is facing a charge of carrying a concealed firearm without a license. However, local authorities are currently conducting an investigation under the assumption that there were multiple shooters and the shooting was unplanned.
“We’re operating under the belief that the shooter or shooters in this case did not come here with the specific design to cause a mass casualty event,” said Christopher de Barrena-Sarobe, district attorney for Pennsylvania’s Chester County. “We’re treating this as a shooting that broke out.”
The following afternoon, Lincoln University issued a statement to the campus community.
“What occurred last night was tragic for our students, our families, and our community,” reads the statement. “Gun violence happens far too often in our country, and we are heartbroken that Lincoln University and its students are among the latest victims of such senseless violence.”
The post continues, “We continue to work closely with law enforcement to ensure justice and safeguard the well-being of our campus community. Together, we remain Lincoln University Strong and Lincoln University Resilient.”
