Edray Goins, professor of mathematics and statistics at Pomona College in California, has been elected president of the Mathematical Association of America, making him the first African American to lead the professional organization in its 110-year history. Dr. Goins will serve a one-year term as president-elect beginning July 1, 2026, followed by two years as president beginning July 1, 2027.
Before joining the Pomona College faculty, Dr. Goins taught at Purdue University for 14 years. He has worked as a researcher for several universities and organizations, including Harvard University and the National Security Agency. As a mathematician, he specializes in applied mathematics, graph theory, number theory, representation theory, Diophantine equations, and elliptic curves.
Dr. Goins is also dedicated to supporting underrepresented students and scholars in mathematical research. He currently directs the Pomona Research in Mathematics Experience – a National Science Foundation-funded Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) program. Additionally, Dr. Goins leads the Mathematicians of the African Diaspora database, a resource dedicated to promoting and highlighting the contributions of members of the African diaspora to mathematics. In 2024, he was a consultant for the documentary Journeys of Black Mathematicians.
Dr. Goins earned his bachelor’s degree in mathematics and physics from the California Institute of Technology and his Ph.D. in mathematics from Stanford University in California.
