During the fall 2025 semester, Central State conducted an informal assessment with faculty members teaching introductory English courses, which revealed a need for a centralized space where students could receive consistent help with their writing assignments. Faculty and staff then worked together to develop a multifaceted model integrating faculty expertise, trained peer tutors, and student-centered programming. Currently, the Writing Center has 15 peer tutors who were all trained by English faculty to ensure their support is detailed and accurate when facilitating both one-on-one and group tutoring sessions.

Going forward, Dames plans to expand the Writing Center to serve as a hub for literary-focused programming, such as creative writing initiatives and student clubs.
“Tutoring isn’t just for students who are failing,” said Dames. “It’s for students who want reassurance, stronger organization, or a confidence boost.”
