Following years of financial turmoil and declines in student enrollment, Martin University, the only predominantly Black higher education institution in the state of Indiana, permanently closed its doors in January. Now, a group of former students, staff, and Martin’s alumni association are suing the college for disrupting its students’ education and staff’s employment, according to a report from WTHR.
One plaintiff, Kevin Getter, was slated to begin a Ph.D. program at Walden University; however, he was forced to withdraw after Walden informed him that his financial aid account at Martin was still open, therefore making him ineligible to open a financial aid account at Walden. Although Getter reached out to Martin to resolve the issue, he never received a response.
Getter and his fellow plaintiffs are seeking attorney fees and punitive damages for Martin’s interference with their student education, failure to disclose information on its financial condition, and negligent operations.
