In Memoriam: Erroll B. Davis Jr., 1944-2026

Erroll B. Davis Jr., former chancellor of the University System of Georgia, passed away on April 26. He was 81 years old.

Davis earned his bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering from Carnegie Mellon University in his hometown of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He later received an MBA in finance from the University of Chicago and began a successful career in business. Davis served as chairman and chief executive officer of Alliant Energy and was a board member with General Motors and Union Pacific Corporation.

Outside of his corporate career, Davis was a dedicated supporter of higher education, serving on the boards of Carnegie Mellon University and the University of Wisconsin System. In 2006, Davis was named chancellor of the University System of Georgia, where he oversaw the state’s 35 colleges and universities. From 2011 to 2014, Davis served as interim superintendent of Atlanta Public Schools. Later in life, Davis and his wife, Elaine, established the Davis Family Foundation, which has provided numerous scholarships to students in need.
