Talmadge King Jr., dean of the School of Medicine and vice chancellor for medical affairs at the University of California, San Francisco, has announced his intent to step down from his deanship after 11 years of service. After taking a sabbatical, Dr. King plans to return to the faculty and continue teaching and mentoring students at the medical school.
Dr. King was appointed to his current role in 2015, following nine years as chair of the university’s department of medicine. Before joining the UCSF faculty in 1997, Dr. King taught at the University of Colorado for two decades.
A physician-scientist, Dr. King is a leading authority on interstitial lung disease. His work has helped define the group of conditions that cause scarring and inflammation in the lungs and advanced their treatment. He is the author of more than 300 publications and co-editor of eight books.
A native of Georgia, Professor King is a graduate of Gustavus Adolphus College in St. Peter, Minnesota. After earning his medical degree from Harvard Medical School, he completed an internal medicine residency at Emory University Affiliated Hospitals in Atlanta and a fellowship in pulmonology at the University of Colorado.
