New Academic Appointments for Six Black Educators in Academia

Henry R. Young has been appointed vice provost at the University of Georgia. Dr. Young currently serves as the Kroger Professor and department head of clinical and administrative pharmacy in the university’s College of Pharmacy. Before joining the UGA faculty, he taught at the University of Wisconsin School of Pharmacy. His research focuses on health communication, medication-use behaviors, health services, and health outcomes, with particular emphasis on improving patient quality of life.

Dr. Young holds a bachelor’s degree, a certficiate in health communication, and a doctorate in pharmaceutical sciences and pharmacy administration from the University of Florida. He completed postdoctoral training at the Center for Health Services Research in Primary Care at the University of California, Davis.

Marlene Daut, professor of French and Black studies at Yale University, has been named a 2026–2027 fellow of the New York Public Library’s Dororthy and Lewis B. Cullman Center for Scholars and Writers. During her fellowship, she will work on a new biography of Jean-Pierre Boyer, a Haitian revolutionary turned president. Dr. Daut has authored several books on Haitian history, including The First and Last King of Haiti: The Rise and Fall of Henry Christophe (Knopf, 2025).

Professor Daut is a graduate of Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles, where she earned her bachelor’s degree in English and French. She holds a Ph.D. in English from the University of Notre Dame.

Derrick C. Lewis Sr. has joined the faculty of Rust College in Holly Springs, Mississippi, as a new assistant professor of music and director of bands. Lewis has more than 20 years of experience in music education, leadership, and program development. In his new role, he will lead the rebirth of Rust College’s Iron Claw Marching Bearcats.

Lewis earned his bachelor’s degree in music education from Lane College in Tennessee and his master of education degree from Concordia University. He has also completed graduate studies in music at Ohio State University and is currently pursuing a doctorate in educational leadership.

Tricia Penniecook was named director of the Center for Leadership in Public Health Practice in the University of South Florida College of Public Health. Dr. Penniecook, an associate professor of community health sciences, has been serving as the college’s vice dean for faculty and global affairs and as chair of the Council on Education for Public Health reaccreditation process. Before coming to the University of South Florida, Dr. Penniecook served as vice president of academic administration at Oakwood University in Alabama. Earlier, she was the first Afro-Latina to serve as dean of the School of Public Health at Loma Linda University in California.

Dr. Penniecook received her master of public health degree and her medical degree from the University of Montemorelos in Mexico.

Jennifer Hunter is an assistant professor of pediatric dentistry at Virginia Commonwealth University. Dr. Hunter recently completed a residency in pediatric dentistry at VCU, following nearly a decade in private practice. She is the first pediatric dentistry resident at the university in 10 years to transition to a faculty appointment.

Dr. Hunter is a graduate of Howard University in Washington, D.C. She earned her doctor of dental surgery degree from the University of Michigan.

Ken-Terika “Kenni” Zellner is the new Drinan Visiting Assistant Professor at the Boston College Law School. As a scholar, Dr. Zellner specializes in civil procedure and jurisprudence as well as social and political philosophy. She previously worked for Jorge Alonso of the U.S. District Court of the Northern District of Illinois as a legal research and writing assistant. She has also served as assistant chair of the Humanities Residential College at Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois.

Dr. Zellner received her bachelor’s degree in philosophy and legal studies with a minor in German from Northwestern University, where she recently completed a joint juris doctorate/Ph.D. program in philosophy.
