S.G. Carthell, Sr. has been promoted to assistant vice president for student services at Murray State University in Kentucky. Prior to his new role, he was executive director of student enrichment, academic, excellence, and leadership. Before joining Murray State, Dr. Carthell was assistant vice president for student affairs and director of multicultural student enrichment at Miami University in Ohio.
A U.S. Air Force veteran, Dr. Carthell holds a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice and criminology from Ball State University in Indiana, a master’s degree in mass communication from Miami University in Ohio, and a doctorate in educational leadership from Western Kentucky University.
Nicole Porter was named executive vice president of student learning and success at the College of Alameda in California. Prior to her new role, Dr. Porter served as the college’s vice president of instruction. Earlier in her tenure, she was vice president of student services and equity and an instructional dean.
Dr. Porter received her doctorate in educational leadership from the University of the Pacific in Stockton, California.
Lloyd H. Nesbitt was appointed vice president for campus operations and facilities management at Edward Waters University in Jacksonville, Florida. Nesbitt has extensive administrative experience with historically Black universities. Most recently, he was associate vice president of facilities management at Alcorn State University in Mississippi. He has also served as director of auxiliary services at Alabama State University and Clark Atlanta University.
Nesbitt holds a bachelor’s degree in mathematics from Albany State University in Georgia and a master of public administration degree in public management from Troy University in Alabama.
Jacqueline G. Powell was selected to serve as interim vice president for academic affairs at Rust College in Holly Springs, Mississippi. Dr. Powell has more than 25 years of leadership experience in higher education. In her interim role, she will oversee Rust College’s academic programs, faculty affairs, curriculum development, assessment, and institutional effectiveness.
Dr. Powell earned a bachelor’s degree in sociology from Texas A&M University, a master’s degree in social work from the University of Texas at Arlington, and both a master’s degree in education and a doctorate in higher education leadership from Texas A&M University-Commerce.
Brian A. Snell has been promoted to director of university bands at Florida Memorial University. Snell, a founding staff member of the HBCU’s ROAR Marching Band, has served as associate director of bands and director of operations since 2020. He has extensive experience as a musician, educator, and creative director, including prior entertainment collaborations with BET, HBO, and VH1.
Snell received his bachelor’s degree from Florida A&M University and his master’s degree from Full Sail University in Winter Park, Florida.
Joshua Smith was appointed director of digital media for the athletic department at the University of Lynchburg in Virginia. His appointment marks a return to the university, where he previously served as an athletics communication graduate assistant. More recently, Smith was assistant director of athletic communications at Bridgewater College in Virginia. Earlier in his career, he was an assistant tennis coach for Greensboro College in North Carolina.
Smith received his bachelor’s degree in sport management from Wingate University in North Carolina and his master’s degree in business administration from the University of Lynchburg.
Donna Polk is the new associate athletic director and senior woman administrator at Coppin State University in Baltimore. Polk comes to her new role with more than 25 years of experience in collegiate athletics, high school sports administration, coaching, and the nonprofit sector. Previously, she was first woman and first African American to serve as executive director of the Delaware Interscholastic Athletic Association. Earlier, she was interim athletic director, associate athletic director and head women’s basketball coach at Bowie State University in Maryland.
Polk holds a bachelor’s degree in counseling psychology from what is now Washington Adventist University and a master’s degree in organizational management from the University of Phoenix.
