Southern University and A&M College to Launch New Undergraduate Degree in Chemical Engineering

The Louisiana Board of Regents has granted approval for the establishment of a bachelor of science degree in chemical engineering at Southern University and A&M College in Baton Rouge.

Housed in the HBCU’s College of Sciences and Engineering, the new undergraduate program was developed with support from Shell Chemicals and other industry partners to address growing workforce demands across Louisiana’s industrial, manufacturing, and technology sectors. Through a combination of laboratory instruction, research initiatives, and experiential learning opportunities, the curriculum spans topics from chemistry, physics, mathematics, engineering science, and process design. Beyond these core foundations, the program places a strong emphasis on process safety, sustainability, advanced manufacturing, process optimization, artificial intelligence applications, and emerging engineering technologies.

“The approval of the bachelor of science in chemical engineering program is a transformational achievement for Southern University and the state of Louisiana,” said Lealon L. Martin, dean of the College of Sciences and Engineering. “This program will expand educational opportunities for our students, strengthen Louisiana’s engineering workforce pipeline, and position Southern University as a leading contributor to innovation, economic development, and industrial competitiveness.”
