New UCLA Online Video Archive Devoted to Former Los Angeles Mayor Tom Bradley

The University of California, Los Angeles Film & Television Archive is the world’s largest university-based moving image archive. It recently announced the creation of the new online archive devoted to news footage of former Los Angeles mayor and UCLA alumnus Tom Bradley.

The archive contains footage from the library of KTLA-TV in Los Angeles. It includes unedited news segments, never-before-seen footage, and news stories not seen publicly since originally broadcast. The new archive was made possible by a grant from John Randolph Haynes and Dora Haynes Foundation.

Tom Bradley was the grandson of a slave and the son of sharecroppers. He enrolled at UCLA in 1937 and was a star track athlete. After college he served as a police officer in Los Angles and later was a member of the City Council. Bradley was elected mayor in 1973 and served in that post for 20 years, more than any other mayor of the nation’s second largest city.

Mayor Bradley died in 1998.
