Dwyane Smith Is the New Leader of Harris-Stowe State University in St. Louis

Harris-Stowe State University, the historically Black educational institution in St. Louis, has appointed Dwyane Smith to serve as interim president. Dwaun Warmack stepped down as president of the university in order to become president of Claflin University in South Carolina. (See JBHE post.)

Harris-Stowe State University enrolls just over 1,700 students, according to the latest statistics provided to the U.S. Department of Education. African Americans make up 82 percent of the student body.

For the past dozen years, Dr. Smith has served as provost and vice president for academic affairs at the university. Before joining the staff at Harris-Stowe State University, Dr. Smith was assistant vice president for academic affairs at Avila University in Kansas City, Missouri. He has also served on the faculty at the University of Missouri and Truman State University in Kirksville, Missouri.

Dr. Smith holds a bachelor’s degree in psychology and a master’s degree in educational administration from Truman State University. He earned a Ph.D. in educational leadership and policy analysis from the University of Missouri.

In Memoriam: William Strickland, 1937-2024

Strickland spent his lifetime dedicated to advancing civil rights and Black political representation. For four decades, he served as a professor of political science at the University of Massachusetts Amherst, where he taught courses on Black history and the civil rights movement.
