Higher Education Grants of Interest to African-Americans

Here is this week’s news of grants to historically Black colleges and universities or for programs of particular interest to African Americans in higher education.

The University of Illinois at Chicago received a five-year, $3 million grant from the National Cancer Institute, for a study to determine if weight-loss programs can help African American breast cancer survivors. Researchers will recruit 240 African American breast cancer survivors who completed their cancer treatments at least six months ago and who currently are overweight.

Washington University in St. Louis has announced that it is awarding $174,000 in diversity and inclusion grants to faculty and administrators for initiatives that improve the university’s environment for women or minorities. Among the funded grant proposals are “Supporting Faculty and Staff Who Work With Students of Color” and “Expanding Diversity in Technology.” Another grant will fund a summer research program for students from Meharry Medical College, a historically Black educational institution in Nashville.

Lincoln University, the historically Black educational institution in Missouri, received a grant from the Environmental Protection Agency to hold a summer camp program for high school students interested in careers relating to water quality. The camp will include lectures, field trips, group activities, and lab work. Officials from the Missouri Department of Natural Resources and the Missouri American Water Company will serve as teachers for the program.
