Brown University Dean Andrew Campbell to Lead the Council of Graduate Schools

Andrew G. Campbell, dean of the Graduate School at Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island, has been selected as chair of the board of directors of the Council of Graduate Schools. He will serve as chair-elect during 2020 before becoming chair for 2021.

The Council of Graduate Schools is governed by a 12-member board of directors drawn from member institutions. It is a national organization representing about 500 graduate institutions. It is dedicated to the advancement of graduate education and research with a focus on advocacy in the policy arena, innovative research and the development and dissemination of best practices.

At Brown, Dr. Campbell is responsible for engaging and supporting more than 2,600 students enrolled in doctoral and master’s programs in more than 40 departments, centers, and institutes, including the School of Engineering, the School of Public Health, and the School of Professional Studies. He has served as dean since 2016.

Dr. Campbell also is a professor of medical science whose research focuses on microbial diseases. He has taught and advised Brown undergraduate and graduate students since 1994, when he came to campus as an assistant professor.

Professor Campbell is a graduate of York College of the City University of New York, where he majored in biology. He earned a Ph.D. in biology at the University of California, Los Angeles.
