The Beulah M. Davis Special Collections Division of the Earl S. Richardson Library at Morgan State University in Baltimore, Maryland, has recently acquired the papers of historian Dr. Lathan A. Windley.
Dr. Windley was an associate professor of history at Morgan State University from 1963 until his death in 1982 at the age of 42. At Morgan, he taught courses in United States history, colonial history, Afro-American history, American Negro slavery, the Civil War and Reconstruction, and the French Revolution. Among his notable scholarly achievements, Dr. Windley edited the four-volume compilation, Runaway Slave Advertisements: A Documentary History from the 1730s to 1790 (Greenwood, 1983) and authored A Profile of Runaway Slaves in Virginia and South Carolina from 1730 through 1787 (Routledge, 1995).
The collection, donated to Morgan State by Dr. Windley’s wife, Flossie E. Windley, a retired Morgan State University professor, includes Dr. Windley’s teaching notes, course materials, research files, writings, books, articles and papers, certificates, photographs, and other correspondence.
A native of Beaufort, North Carolina, Dr. Windley held bachelor’s and master’s degrees in history from North Carolina Central University in Durham. He earned a Ph.D. in history from the University of Iowa in 1974.
