The board of regents of Morgan State University, a historically Black educational institution in Baltimore, has approved a pilot program that will allow the university to offer degree programs in partnership with the African University College of Communications in Ghana. The pilot program is scheduled to begin in fall 2020, creating opportunities for western African students to pursue degrees from Morgan State University. The collaboration marks a first of its kind for an HBCU in Ghana. Morgan State will be among the few American universities offering degree programs in Africa.
The degree programs that will be offered to students in Ghana are a master of business administration degree, a master’s degree in global multimedia journalism and communications, and a bachelor’s degree program in entrepreneurship.
“Over the past five years, we have been very interested in Africa and have been eyeing expansion into new markets. We look forward to piloting these three academic degree programs in Ghana, and if this initiative is successful in attracting top-notch students and awarding them highly valued Morgan degrees, we will consider establishing a more physical presence in Africa,” said Morgan President David Wilson. “We cannot afford to stand still. It is incumbent upon the university to always lean forward and continuously explore all viable opportunities in this rapidly transforming higher education environment.”
Once again, the misguided Morgan State president Dr. Wilson is expending finite resources on initiatives that could be better used “on Morgan’s campus”. Here’s a few questions Dr. Wilson and other Morgan’s administrator’s and especially the Board of Regents need to answer: 1) Did Morgan State administer any type of campus wide survey to measure the students, alumni(a) or faculty opinion? 2) Who will paying for the costs of this pilot program? 3) How can you offer an MBA program when your own MBA is academically weak? 4) How did the Board of Regents vote on this pilot program? and 5) Why does it appear that Morgan State is becoming less of an identifiable HBCU and that of a “mini-PWI”? Also, somebody need to explain why we don’t none of the universities in Ghana or any other Third World African country in the US recruiting “native born Black Americans to attend their universities. I wonder why. In close, Dr. Wilson and his minions have a lot of explaining to do.
