Claflin University, the historically Black educational institution in Orangeburg, South Carolina, has announced that it will offer a master’s degree program in nursing. The new program will admit students this fall. Claflin will be the first historically Black educational institution in South Carolina to offer a graduate degree program in nursing.
Karl Wright, provost at Claflin University stated that “there is a great need for graduate-level nurses in South Carolina. They will help meet the nursing needs in the rural communities that are underserved by the healthcare profession.”
The proposed program still needs to be authorized by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. The accrediting body will give its decision on the new program in June.
