Prairie View A&M University Alumnae Develop My HBCU Box

Danielle Simmons and Derreka Shelton, two alumnae of historically Black Prairie View A&M University in Texas, have developed a new business called My HBCU Box. Subscribers to the service receive a package each quarter that contains merchandise valued at $100 or more. The items in the box pertain to HBCU culture and to the subscriber’s particular HBCU. Each quarter the items will have a particular theme. Items in each box may include sweatshirts, jackets, T-shirts, accessories, and stationery.

“The idea came about because we were tired of looking for original, different things for HBCUs, beyond Spelman, Howard, Morehouse, etc.,” Simmons said. “HBCUs often get overlooked, and we wanted to be able to offer items for all of these schools, customized with their colors, mascots, and themes.”

Simmons added that “growing up in California, I always knew I wanted to go to a Black college, and everyone I know from PVAMU is productive, successful, and making strides in whatever industry they’re in. My experience there opened my eyes to our culture and the possibilities I had ahead of me.”

The cost of a subscription to MY HBCU Box is $49.99 per quarter. A portion of the profits will be designated for scholarships for students at HBCUs.
