Five African Americans Who Are Assuming New Administrative Duties in Higher Education

Marita Gilbert was named the associate dean of diversity and campus inclusion at the College of Osteopathic Medicine at Michigan State University.

A native of New Orleans, Dr. Gilbert earned a bachelor’s degree in mass communications from Auburn University in Alabama and a Ph.D. in kinesiology with concentrations in the sociology of sport and college teaching and learning from Michigan State University.

Dustin Fulton has been named interim assistant dean for admissions in the College of Medicine at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center in Memphis. A member of the staff since 2014, Dr. Fulton most recently served as associate director of student affairs and student conduct officer.

Dr. Fulton has a bachelor’s degree in business administration from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. He earned a master’s degree in leadership and policy studies and a doctorate in higher education administration, both from the University of Memphis.

Valerie Fields was appointed interim vice president of student affairs at the University of Louisiana-Monroe. Dr. Fields served as director of student development at the University of Louisiana-Monroe from 1996 to 2003. She was then appointed assistant dean for student life and leadership.

Dr. Fields is a graduate of Southern University in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, where she majored in early childhood and elementary education. She holds a master’s degree in education from the University of Louisiana-Monroe and an educational doctorate from Louisiana Tech.

Anna Spain Bradley has been named the new vice chancellor for equity, diversity, and inclusion at the University of California, Los Angeles, effective September 1. Since 2017, she has been assistant vice provost for faculty development and diversity at the University of Colorado at Boulder. Earlier in her career, Bradley served as deputy director of the UCLA Burkle Center for International Relations.

Bradley holds a bachelor’s degree in environmental studies at Denison University in Granville, Ohio. She earned a juris doctorate at Harvard Law School.

Cheldon Williams has been named the associate director of bands at West Virginia University. On August 1, Dr. Williams will become the 13th director of the Pride of West Virginia Mountaineer Marching Band. Dr. Williams comes to WVU from the University of Texas at Austin, where he was a graduate teaching assistant for the Longhorn Band.

Dr. Williams holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees in music education from Florida State University. He earned a doctorate in musical arts from the University of Texas at Austin.
