Four African Americans Appointed to University Dean Positions

Anthony R. Bowrin is the new dean of the Cotsakos College of Business at William Paterson University in Wayne, New Jersey. Since 2016, Dr. Bowrin has served as dean of the Scott L. Carmona College of Business at Saginaw Valley State University in Michigan.

Dr. Bowrin holds a bachelor’s degree in management and a master’s degree in accounting from the University of the West Indies in Trinidad and Tobago. He earned a Ph.D. in auditing from Southern Illinois University Carbondale.

Ophelie Rowe-Allen was appointed dean of students and chief student affairs officer at the University of New Haven in Connecticut. She has spent the last 13 years on the staff at Fairfield University in Connecticut, where she has served as associate dean of students, director of residence life, associate dean of assessment, and director of student diversity and multicultural affairs.

Dr. Rowe-Allen holds a bachelor’s degree in psychology and a master’s degree in mental health counseling from St. Thomas University in Miami, Florida. She received her educational doctorate in counseling education and supervision from Argosy University.

Ulysses Taylor, a professor of accounting and chair of the department of accounting, finance, healthcare and information systems at Fayetteville State University in North Carolina, has been named interim dean of the university’s Broadwell College of Business and Economics. Professor Taylor has been a member of the university’s faculty since 1992 and a department chair since 1997.

Professor Taylor earned a bachelor’s degree in accounting at Fayetteville State University. He holds an MBA from East Carolina University in Greenville, North Carolina, and a law degree from North Carolina Central University.

Michele Cruse was named vice president and dean of student affairs at the University of Pittsburgh at Bradford. Since November 2019, she has served as the associate dean of student affairs and experiential education at the university. Earlier, she was dean of student development at Portland Community College in Oregon.

A native of Pittsburgh, Dr. Cruse earned a bachelor’s degree in public administration at the University of Pittsburgh. She holds a master’s degree from Portland State University in Oregon and a doctorate in education from Oregon State University.
