James S. Jackson, the Daniel Katz Distinguished University Professor of Psychology, Emeritus, at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, died at his home last month. He was 76 years old and had suffered from pancreatic cancer.
A native of Inkster, Michigan, Professor Jackson was the first in his family to go to college. He earned a bachelor’s degree at Michigan State University. Professor Jackson held a master’s degree from the University of Toledo in Ohio and a doctorate from Wayne State University in Detroit.
Dr. Jackson also held appointments as a professor of Afro-American and African studies and as a research professor at the Institute for Social Research at the University of Michigan. He joined the faculty there in 1971.
Dr. Jackson was chair of the National Association of Black Psychologists in 1972-73. He served as president of the Consortium of Social Science Associations and the Society for the Psychological Study of Social Issues. He was inducted into the National Academy of Medicine, the National Academy of Sciences, and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. Dr. Jackson was a charter trustee at Dartmouth College since 2016.
