In Memoriam: William E. Moore, 1941-2020

William Moore, a longtime faculty member and administrator at Southern University in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, died on December 10. He was 79 years old.

Dr. Moore joined the chemistry faculty at Southern University in the late 1960s, and achieved the rank of full professor within five years. He established a strong undergraduate research program, which contributed to many of his students going on to obtain medical or doctoral degrees. Professor Moore became the first president of the faculty senate in 1973.

Dr. Moore left Southern Univerity in 1982 to serve as academic vice president, Distinguished Professor of Chemistry, and director of Title III programs at Prairie View A&M University in Texas. In 1985, he was named academic vice president and chief academic officer at Texas Southern University in Houston.

Professor Moree returned to Southern University in 1989 to serve as vice chancellor for academic affairs.

A graduate of Southern University, Dr. Moore was the first African American to earn a Ph.D. in chemistry at Purdue University in West Lafayette, Indiana. In 2006, Purdue University established the William E. Moore Distinguished Professor of Earth and Atmospheric Science and Chemistry in his honor.
