Ten HBCUs Receive More Than $97 Million in Combined Federal Defense Funding

More than $97 million in federal defense funding will support STEM research programs at 10 HBCUs across the South. The new funds aim to support more HBCUs in achieving the prestigious R1 status, the highest research activity classification among colleges and universities in the United States. This designation opens the door for major federal funding opportunities, which could help recruit high-achieving faculty and doctoral students. Howard University in Washington, D.C., is the only HBCU in the country with R1 status.

“For too long, HBCUs have gone unrecognized for their contributions to our nation’s leading STEM industry,” said Senator Raphael Warnock of Georgia. “These institutions serve as stewards of academic excellence and innovation, and this federal investment specifically in STEM programs honors that legacy of greatness and expands opportunity for the next generation of scientists.”

The following HBCUs will benefit from this round of funding:

  • Clark Atlanta University, $9.78 million
  • Delaware State University, $9.99 million
  • The University of the District of Columbia, $9.98 million
  • Florida A&M University, $10 million
  • Morgan State University, $10 million
  • Jackson State University, $7.57 million
  • Fayetteville State University, $9.90 million
  • North Carolina A&T State University, $10 million
  • Prairie View A&M University, $9.85 million
  • Texas Southern University, $9.99 million
