African American Faculty News

Sue E. Houchins, an associate professor of African American studies at Bates College in Lewiston, Maine, was awarded tenure. Professor Houchins also teaches in the women and gender studies program at Bates. Prior to joining the Bates College faculty in 2003, she taught at Scripps College in California for 22 years.

Professor Houchins holds bachelor’s and graduate degrees from the University of California at Los Angeles.

Maryemma Graham, a member of the English department faculty at the University of Kansas since 1998, was named a University Distinguished Professor. Dr. Graham is the founder and director of the Project on the History of Black Writing and the former president of the Toni Morrison Society. She is the co-editor of the Cambridge History of African American Literature..

Professor Graham is a graduate of the University of North Carolina and holds a master’s degree in English from Northwestern University. She holds a second master’s degree in Africana studies and a Ph.D. in English from Cornell University.

Carlos J. Minor was appointed assistant professor of education at Northwestern Oklahoma State University in Alva. For the past nine years, Dr. Minor has served as a guidance counselor and athletic coach at a K-12 school in the Atlanta metropolitan area.

Dr. Minor is a graduate of Xavier University. He holds a master’s degree and an educational doctorate from Clark Atlanta University.

M. Bernadette Carter was named professor emerita at Cheyney University  in Pennsylvania. Dr. Carter began her academic career at Cheyney University in 1976 when she was named an admissions counselor. In 1990 she was appointed assistant professor of mathematics and was named full professor in 2005. She has also served as dean of the School of Arts and Sciences.

Professor Carter is a graduate of Cheyney University. She holds a doctorate in mathematics education from Temple University.
