Three Universities Announce the Appointments of African American Diversity Officers

Carl Hampton is the inaugural chief diversity officer at Governor State University in Illinois. He was the senior diversity and inclusion officer for the University of Wisconsin System.

Hampton holds a bachelor’s degree in political science from Stanford University and a juris doctorate from the University of Wisconsin Law School. He is studying for a Ph.D. in educational leadership and policy analysis at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

Kristie A. Ford has been named the inaugural associate provost for diversity, equity, and inclusion at Washington and Lee University in Lexington, Virginia. She is the Quadracci Chair in Social Responsibility and professor of sociology, and director of the Center for Leadership, Teaching, and Learning at Skidmore College in Saratoga Springs, New York. She will begin her new job on January 1.

Dr. Ford received a bachelor’s degree in sociology from Amherst College in Massachusetts. She holds a master’s degree and a Ph.D. in sociology from the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor.

Michael States will serve as the inaugural associate dean of diversity, equity, and inclusion at the University of Wisconsin Law School in Madison, effective December 1. He has been serving as assistant dean for admissions, diversity, and inclusion at the Moritz College of Law of Ohio State University.

States is a graduate of the University of Kansas, where he majored in political science. He earned a juris doctorate at Saint Louis University.

In Memoriam: Roy Hudson, 1930-2024

From 1970 to 1976, Dr. Hudson served as the tenth president of what is now Hampton University in Virginia. He also held an interim appointment as president of his undergraduate alma mater, Livingstone College in North Carolina.
