Oakwood University Choir Wins Three Gold Medals at World Choir Games

The Aeolians Choir of Oakwood University in Huntsville, Alabama, won three gold medals while competing in the World Choir Olympics in Cincinnati, Ohio. The World Choir Olympics, held every other year, is the largest international choir competition. At this year’s event there were more than 360 choirs from 70 countries. In all, there was about 15,000 choir members participating in the event.

The Oakwood University choir is one of only two ensembles from a historically Black college or university that was invited to compete in the World Choir Olympics. The other participating choir was from Wilberforce University in Ohio.

The Oakwood University choir won gold medals in the categories of music of the religions, contemporary music, and spirituals. The Aeolians won the championship designation in the spirituals category.
