A Check-Up on Black First-Year Medical Students

Several medical schools have announced the racial and ethnic makeup of their incoming classes.

The Alpert Medical School at Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island, has the largest incoming class in its history due to the opening of a new medical education building. African Americans make up 10 percent of the class of 120 students.

At Florida State University, there are 120 students in the first-year class. Some 37 percent of the class is made up of minority students and Blacks are 13 percent of the entering students.

At Florida Atlantic University in Boca Raton, only 3 percent of the entering class of 64 students are African Americans.
