Freeman A. Hrabowski III, president of the University of Maryland Baltimore County for the past 20 years, has been selected to receive the Heinz Award in Human Condition from the Heinz Family Foundation. He will be presented the award at a ceremony in Pittsburgh on October 11. Dr. Hrabowski will be honored for his work to increase the number of Black and other minority students who seek degrees in science and engineering.
The Heinz Award comes with a $250,000 cash prize. Dr. Hrabowski stated he will donate the cash to the Innovation Fund at the University of Maryland Baltimore County.
President Hrabowski is a graduate of Hampton University and holds master’s and doctoral degrees from the University of Illinois.
