Universities Announce the Appointments of Four African Americans to Dean Positions

Tracey Weldon has been named dean of the Graduate School and vice provost for graduate education at the University of South Carolina. She has served in these roles on an interim basis for the past year. She joined the university in 2000 as a faculty member in the College of Arts and Sciences with a joint appointment in the department of English language and literature and the linguistics program.

Dr. Weldon is a graduate of Furman University in Greenville, South Carolina, where she majored in English and French. She holds a Ph.D. in linguistics from Ohio State University.

Jelani Cobb has been appointed dean of the Columbia Journalism School in New York City, effective August 1. He is the Ira A. Lipman Professor of Journalism and director of the Ira A. Lipman Center for Journalism and Civil and Human Rights at the university. Dr. Cobb joined the faculty at Columbia University in 2016. Since 2012, he has been a contributor and staff writer for The New Yorker. He is the author of several books including The Substance of Hope: Barack Obama and the Paradox of Progress (Walker, 2010).

Dr. Cobb is a graduate of Howard University in Washington, D.C. He holds a Ph.D. in American history from Rutgers University in New Jersey.

James Satterfield Jr. will be the next dean of the College of Education at Boise State University in Idaho. Since 2020, Dr. Satterfield has led the department of educational foundations, leadership, and technology at Auburn University in Alabama. He previously served as department head of counseling, leadership, and special education at Missouri State University and program coordinator for the Ph.D. in higher education program at Clemson University in South Carolina.

Dr. Satterfield holds a bachelor’s degree in kinesiology and a master’s degree in gifted education from Norfolk State Univerity in Virginia. He earned an educational doctorate at Eastern Michigan University.

Stacy L. Jones has been named the new dean of students at the University of Alabama. She has been interim dean since August 2020. Dr. Jones has been a student affairs practitioner at the University of Alabama for more than 28 years.

Dr. Jones earned a bachelor’s degree in advertising, a master’s degree, and a doctorate in higher education from the University of Alabama.
