Three Black Scholars Named to New Faculty Positions

Olufunmilayo Arewa was named full professor at the University of California at Irvine. She has a joint appointment in the departments of law and anthropology. She previously practiced law in New York and California.

A magna cum laude graduate of Harvard College, she holds a master’s degree and a Ph.D. in anthropology from the University of California at Berkeley. She is a graduate of Harvard Law School and holds a master’s degree in economics from the University of Michigan.

Walter Allen Bennett Jr. was named to the Felton J. Capel Distinguished Visiting Chair in the department of performing and fine arts at Fayetteville State University.

Bennett has written or produced more than 200 episodes of television series. He is also the author of 14 plays. He holds master of fine arts degrees from Yale University and the University of California at Los Angeles.

Christine Thorpe was appointed chair of the department of human services at New York City College of Technology of the City University of New York.  She is an assistant professor in the department.

Dr. Thorpe holds a doctorate in health education and a master’s degree in international educational development from Teachers College at Columbia University.
