Washington and Lee University Adds Four Black Assistant Professors to Its Faculty

Washington and Lee University, the highly rated liberal arts educational institution in Lexington, Virginia, has appointed four African Americans to assistant professor positions.

Christopher Brown is a new assistant professor of anthropology. He most recently served as an instructor in global studies at the University of Maryland Baltimore County. His teaching and research interests include African political cultures, social-ecological systems, subjectivity and global education, ethnographic methods, and migration. Brown earned a Ph.D. in anthropology from Ohio State University.

K. Avvirin Gray is a new assistant professor of English. Her research and teaching interests include 19th- and 20th-century Native American and African American literature. Dr. Gray holds a bachelor’s degree from Sarah Lawrence College in Bronxville, New York. She earned a master’s degree in American Indian studies with a concentration in gender studies from the University of California, Los Angeles and a Ph.D. in American studies and ethnicity from the University of Southern California.

Jimmie Johnson III is an assistant professor of physical education and assistant football coach at the university. His areas of interest include leadership development and the intersection of athletics and diversity, inclusion, and engagement. Johnson earned a bachelor’s degree in history in 2020 from Washington and Lee University.

Ehi Rajsky was appointed an assistant professor of accounting. Her research and teaching interests include tax compliance, and government and non-profit organizations. Dr. Rajsky holds a bachelor’s degree in architecture from Ahmadu Bello University in Nigeria. She received a master’s degree in accounting from La Salle University in Philadelphia and a Ph.D. in business administration from Temple University in Philadelphia.
