Four African Americans Who Have Been Appointed to Dean Positions in Higher Education

Daryl Joseph Moore is the new dean of the College of the Arts at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette. He most recently served as dean of the College of the Arts and Communication at William Paterson University in Wayne, New Jersey. Moore was the founding dean of the College of the Arts at California State University, Stanislaus. Earlier, he chaired the department of art and design at Montclair State University in New Jersey. He is the author of Design and the Creative Process (Thomson Delmar Learning, 2007).

Dean Moore holds a bachelor of fine arts degree in communication design from the Pratt Institute in New York. He earned a master of fine arts degree in advertising design from Syracuse University in New York.

Jeanie C. Lucy has been named dean of the School of Arts and Sciences at Alverno College in Milwaukee. She has been serving as an assistant professor at the Chicago College of Optometry.

Dr. Lucy holds a bachelor’s degree in biological science teaching from Chicago State University. She earned a master of public health degree from the University of Illinois Chicago and a doctor of optometry degree from the Illinois College of Optometry. Dr. Lucy also holds a master’s degree and a Ph.D. in values-driven leadership from Benedictine University in Lisle, Illinois.

Racquel Ingram was named the founding dean of the School of Nursing at High Point University in North Carolina. Dr. Ingram joined the university’s Congdon School of Health Sciences in 2021 as founding chair and assistant professor for the department of nursing.

Dr. Ingtram is a nursing graduate of Winston-Salem State University in North Carolina. She holds a master’s degree and a Ph.D. in nursing from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro.

Jonathan Miller was appointed dean of student engagement at the Community College of Rhode Island in Warwick. He was the assistant vice president of student affairs and later dean of students at Northern Essex Community College in Haverhill, Massachusetts.

Miller earned a bachelor’s degree in human development and family studies from Pennsylvania State University. He holds a master’s degree in student personnel from Slippery Rock University of Pennsylvania. Dean Miller is currently a doctoral candidate in community college leadership at Ferris State University in Michigan.
