Three African Americans Appointed to Diversity Posts in Higher Education

Shawn Washington was appointed assistant director of diversity at Gonzaga University in Spokane, Washington. He was a diversity, equity, and inclusion officer at Whitworth University in Spokane for seven years.

A native of Alaska, Washington earned a bachelor’s degree in sociology from Whitworth University. He holds a master’s degree from Gonzaga University.

Sheree M. Ohen is the new chief equity and inclusion officer at Amherst College in Massachusetts. She most recently served as associate dean for equity, diversity, inclusion, and belonging for Harvard University’s Faculty of Arts and Sciences. Prior to her tenure at Harvard, she served as the chief officer of diversity and inclusion at Clark University in Worcester, Massachusetts.

Ohen earned a bachelor’s degree from the University of California, Berkeley, and a law degree from the Golden Gate University School of Law.

Carol A. Sumner was appointed vice president of diversity, equity, and inclusion and chief diversity officer at Northern Illinois University. She has been serving as the chief diversity officer at Texas Tech University. She was the first African American to serve in an executive-level position at Texas Tech.

Dr. Summer earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees at Illinois State University. She holds an educational doctorate from Arizona State University.
