New Administrative Duties in Higher Education for Six African Americans

Brandon A. Logan has been named vice president for university advancement and innovation at Grambling State University in Louisiana. He will also serve as executive director of the Grambling University Foundation. Since 2020, Logan has been the executive director of the Doug Williams Center for the Study of Race and Politics in Sports at the university.

Logan earned his bachelor’s degree at Grambling State University in three years.

Melinda Spaulding Chevalier has been appointed vice president for public affairs at Rice University in Houston, Texas. She most recently served as vice president of communications and advancement at Texas Southern University and as executive director of the TSU Foundation. Earlier, she was an Emmy Award-winning journalist for a television station in Houston.

A native of New Jersey, Spaulding Chevalier earned a bachelor’s degree in journalism from Howard University.

Jeremy Carter was named associate dean of campus culture and religious life at Philander Smith University in Little Rock, Arkansas. He had been serving as director of housing and residential life. Earlier, Carter was a kindergarten and fifth-grade classroom teacher.

Carter holds a bachelor’s degree in sociology, with a minor in Black family studies from Philander Smith University.

Holly Rachel is the new executive director of the Darrell S. Freeman Sr. Incubation and Innovation Center at Fisk University in Nashville. Previously, Rachel and her business partner launched a technology consulting firm specializing in helping small to midsize businesses strategically scale with data.

Rachel is a graduate of Oakwood University in Huntsville, Alabama, where she majored in biochemistry. She earned a master’s degree in chemistry at Vanderbilt University in Nashville.

Marriel Hardy was named associate vice president and chief communications officer at Talladega College in Alabama. He comes to Talladega after serving as chief of communications for Coahoma Community College in Mississippi for five years. Earlier, he worked at Alcorn State University in Mississippi for eight years.

Hardy earned a bachelor’s degree in mass communication and a master’s degree in workforce educational leadership from Alcorn State University.

Kenneth Elvis Jones is the new executive vice president and chief of staff at Wilberforce University in Ohio. He was vice president for transformational initiatives and strategic assessment at Fisk University in Nashville. Earlier, he was dean of liberal and fine arts at Elizabeth City State University in North Carolina.

Dr. Jones earned a bachelor’s degree in radio/TV production at the University of Mississippi. He holds a Ph.D. from Howard University and a doctorate in ministry from the Virginia Theological Seminary in Alexandria.
