A New Assignment for Dr. Benjamin Carson

Benjamin Carson, professor of neurosurgery, oncology, plastic surgery, and pediatrics and director of pediatric neurosurgery at the Johns Hopkins University Hospital, was named president of the board of the East Baltimore Community School. The board oversees the operation of the Elmer A. Henderson School, a charter K-8 school operating under a partnership between Johns Hopkins University and the Baltimore City Public Schools.

The school currently enrolls about 260 students. Next year, the school will relocate to a new facility on a seven-acre site adjacent to the Johns Hopkins campus. Capacity will increase to 540 students at the new 90,000-square-foot facility.

Last year, the Johns Hopkins University School of Education, in partnership with Morgan State University’s School of Education and Urban Studies, took over the day-to-day operation of the school, informally known as Henderson-Hopkins. “I am excited to be a part of an endeavor like Henderson-Hopkins that can provide not only an example, but also a how-to manual for inner city schools, universities and corporate entities that want to work together to strengthen the fabric of our society,” Dr. Carson said.

Dr. Carson is a graduate of Yale University and the University of Michigan School of Medicine.
