New Administrative Duties for Five African Americans in Higher Education

Joel T. Faison is the new chief information officer at North Carolina Central University in Durham. Since 2021, he has been the chief information officer at Shaw University in Raleigh, North Carolina. Earlier in his career, Faison was the chief information officer at William Peace University in Raleigh for 11 years.

Fairson earned a bachelor’s degree in accounting at North Carolina Central University.

Gwendolyn Caples was appointed interim vice president of institutional advancement at Jackson State University in Mississippi. She will also serve as executive director of the JSU Development Foundation.

Caples holds a bachelor’s degree in political science from Jackson State University. She earned a master’s degree in mass communications at Mississippi College.

Desireé Honoré Thomas has been appointed associate vice president and senior administrative operations officer for the Southern University System. Before joining the Southern University System, Thomas served as the assistant commissioner of statewide services for the Louisiana Division of Administration.

Thomas holds a bachelor’s degree in finance from Louisiana State University and an MBA from Louisiana State University at Shreveport.

Reginald Holt has been named as CEO of MMC Ventures, a holding company subsidiary of Meharry Medical College created to address health inequities through connecting Meharry faculty and students with healthcare experts, advisers and investors. Holt most recently served as head of Medicare risk adjustment compliance with Cigna.

Holt is a graduate of Tennessee State University, where he majored in business administration. He holds a master’s degree in health law and strategy from New York University.

Karen M. Carty has been named the director of athletics at the University of the Virgin Islands. She is the first woman to hold the position in the university’s 61-year history. She was assistant commissioner for strategic communications at the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference.

Dr. Carty graduated summa cum laude with a bachelor’s degree in general business with an emphasis in marketing from Norfolk State University in Virginia, where she played tennis. She holds a doctorate in higher education administration from Bradley University in Peoria, Illinois.

Dr. Cook was a longtime faculty member and administrator at Lincoln University of Missouri. A full professor of biology, he held several leadership roles including vice president for academic affairs.
