A Group of Black Scholars Who Have Been Appointed to Endowed Chairs

Karen Flynn was appointed the inaugural Terrance & Karyn Holm Endowed Professor in Nursing at the University of Illinois Chicago College of Nursing. She has been serving as an associate professor in the department of gender and women’s studies and the African-American studies program at the University of Illinois Urbana/Champaign. Dr. Flynn will also serve as the director of the Midwest Nursing History Research Centre, which is housed at the University of Illinois Chicago School of Nursing.

Dr Flynn is the author of Moving Beyond Borders: Black Canadian and Caribbean Women in the African Canadian Diaspora (University of Toronto Press, 2011). She holds a Ph.D. in women’s studies from York University in Toronto.

Ruth Blake, a leading marine and environmental biogeochemist and geomicrobiologist, was recently appointed the Edward P. Bass  Professor of Earth and Planetary Sciences and professor of chemical engineering and environment at Yale University. She joined the Yale faculty in 2000.

Dr. Blake is a graduate of Wayne State University in Detroit where she earned a bachelor’s in geology. She also holds a master’s degree in hydrogeology from the University of Texas and a Ph.D. in geochemistry from the University of Michigan.

Baron Kelly is the first recipient of the Marilynn R. Baxter Professorship in the department of theatre and drama at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He also is the Vilas Distinguished Professor at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Dr. Kelly is co-author/co-editor of Building Embodiment: Integrating Acting, Voice, and Movement to Illuminate Poetic Text (Routledge, 2023).

Dr. Kelly earned a diploma from London’s Royal Academy of Dramatic Art and holds a master of fine arts degree in acting from California State Univerity, Long Beach. He earned a Ph.D. in theatre research from the University of Wisconsin.
