Christon Arthur Named First Black President of La Sierra University in California

Christon Arthur has been named the sixth president of La Sierra University in Riverside, California. Upon assuming his new role on July 1, he will become the university’s first Black president.

La Sierra University enrolls nearly 1,300 undergraduate students and 350 graduate students. African Americans represent 6 percent of the undergraduate student body.

Dr. Arthur has served as provost of Andrews University in Michigan since 2016. Before becoming the university’s chief academic officer, he served as dean of the School of Graduate Studies and Research and professor of educational administration. Earlier in his career, he held various administrative positions and taught as an associate professor of educational administration at Tennessee State University for four years. His career in education spans over three decades and includes leadership roles with elementary and secondary schools.

Dr. Arthur is a graduate of the University of the Southern Caribbean in Trinidad and Tobago where he majored in theology. He holds an educational specialist degree in curriculum and instruction and a doctorate in educational administration from Andrews University. He is currently pursuing an MBA from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
