Marcelitte Failla has joined the faculty at North Carolina State University as an assistant professor of religious studies and women’s, gender, and sexuality studies. Her current book project investigates how contemporary Black witches employ African diasporic religions for manifestation, healing, and protection from anti-Blackness.
Dr. Failla is a graduate of Hunter College in New York City. She holds a master of fine arts degree in film production from the City University of New York and a Ph.D. in religion from Emory University.
Travis Alvarez has joined the faculty at LaGuardia Community College a campus of the City University of New York System as a professor in the social sciences department. Prior to his new role, he held teaching positions with the University of Pittsburgh in Pennsylvania and Baruch College in New York.
Dr. Alvarez earned his associate’s degree in liberal arts and sciences from CUNY’s New York City College of Technology. He received his bachelor’s degree in psychology from Brooklyn College and his Ph.D. in cognitive science from the University of Pittsburgh.
Shawna Friday-Stroud has been appointed as the Sybil Collins Mobley Endowed Chair in the School of Business and Industry at Florida A&M University. She will also serve as executive director for strategic partnerships and business development. She previously served as the business school’s dean for 14 years.
Dr. Friday-Stroud received her bachelor’s degree and MBA from Florida A&M University. She holds a doctorate in business administration with a concentration in management from Florida International University.
Heather Lavender has joined the faculty at Syracuse University as an assistant professor of inclusive STEM education. Most recently, she served as a postdoctoral fellow with the Frances Early College of Education at the University of Georgia. Her research focuses on advancing awareness and participation in science education among underserved youth.
Dr. Lavender is a three-time graduate of Louisiana State University, where she earned her bachelor’s degree and master’s degree in microbiology, and Ph.D. in curriculum and instruction in science education.
