The Department of Social and Cultural Analysis at New York University invites applications for a tenure-track, assistant professor position in Black Cultural Studies. We are particularly interested in applicants whose research takes an interdisciplinary approach to the social and cultural life of the African diaspora and contributes to the department’s strengths in gender and sexuality studies; critical race and ethnic studies; and/or urban studies.

This position is part of a multi-departmental cluster hire in “Black Diaspora Cultural Studies,” which includes the Arts and Science departments of Art History, History and Music. A primary aim of the cluster is to create a network for scholars at NYU working across a range of disciplines. The Department of Social and Cultural Analysis is an interdisciplinary department committed to developing innovative approaches in urbanism, migration, critical racial, ethnic and indigenous studies, gender and sexuality, art, culture, politics, and economic life. The Department has degree programs in Africana Studies, American Studies, Asian/Pacific/American Studies, Gender and Sexuality Studies, Latinx Studies, Metropolitan Studies, and Social and Cultural Analysis.

The appointment will begin on September 1, 2025, pending administrative and budgetary approval. Candidates must have Ph.D. in hand by September 1, 2025.

In compliance with NYC’s Pay Transparency Act, the annual base salary range for this position is $85,000 to $115,000. New York University considers factors such as (but not limited to) the scope and responsibilities of the position, the candidate’s work experience, education/training, key skills, internal peer equity, as well as market and organizational considerations when extending an offer.
