WHAT YOU’LL DO
Under the general supervision of a Zoo Operations Supervisor, an Instructional Lab Technician II – Registered Veterinary Technician, in collaboration with the Veterinarian for America’s Teaching Zoo, provides medical care to the America’s Teaching Zoo animals and oversees and instructs students in the medical care for zoo, exotic and domestic animals for the Exotic Animal Training and Management (EATM) animal collection.
There is currently one part-time (19 hours/week, 12 months/year) vacancy located at Moorpark College.
This recruitment is also being conducted to establish a list of eligible candidates that will be used to fill district-wide, current and upcoming, temporary and regular vacancies for the duration of the list, not to exceed one year.

Moorpark College, one of three colleges in the Ventura County Community College District, was founded in 1967. SALARY PLACEMENT
New Employees:
Generally, new employees are placed on the first step of the appropriate range of the salary schedule.
Current Employees: An employee who is promoted will be placed on the salary step of the new range of the appropriate salary schedule that provides a minimum increase comparable to a one-step increase in salary.
New and current employees may be eligible for advanced step placement as outlined in Section 290 – SALARY PLAN in the Rules of the Personnel Commission for Classified Employees (Download PDF reader).
Representative Duties
Perform, assist, and instruct students in a broad variety of zoo veterinary care and nursing procedures and techniques, such as darting, netting, hand injections, anesthetic procedures and physical exams, anesthesia monitoring, radiographs, blood draws, sample collection, catheter placement, fluid administration, dental cleaning, and related nursing and veterinary care procedures. E
Handle, capture, restrain, and treat zoo, exotic, and domestic animals during veterinary animal care procedures performed in the zoo, veterinary treatment room, and at veterinary specialty offices or hospitals; instruct students in the above practices and procedures. E
Work with students and staff to triage animal concerns and issues within his/her expertise; follow instructions and perform veterinary nursing under direct or indirect supervision of the veterinarian; refer husbandry, behavior and training questions to appropriate zoo operations staff and faculty. E
Maintain active veterinary case lists and monitor the condition of animals with chronic health problems; report new and update existing conditions to the veterinarian and zoo operations staff. E
Operate, monitor, and maintain a variety of technical veterinary laboratory equipment in the veterinary treatment room. E
Assist in euthanasia as directed by the veterinarian; assist in or perform necropsies, maintain necropsy equipment and supplies, submit pathology samples, and maintain pathology records. E
Instruct students and staff to properly administer medications to zoo, exotic, and domestic animals, prepare laboratory sample submissions and analyze routine samples; implement veterinary standard operating procedures and instruct in the appropriate use of veterinary care equipment; instruct student assistants working in the zoo veterinary treatment room in the use of veterinary equipment, facilities, and other aspects of zoo medicine. Implement and manage a preventive medicine program under the direction of a veterinarian, including vaccinations, fecal parasite exams, and other related exams; schedule and coordinate routine exams, tests, and maintenance procedures; assist in scheduling and coordinating routine exams, tests, and perform maintenance procedures; instruct and assist students in the same. E
Prepare and set up veterinary treatment room and portable grips for zoo animal veterinary procedures by assembling supplies, solutions, equipment, and instruments; setting up diagnostic equipment; inspect, clean, sterilize, and store used supplies and equipment; maintain a clean and orderly veterinary treatment room, storerooms, and work areas; remove, and properly dispose of expired drugs and supplies, order medicines and supplies, and prepare periodic inventory reports; instruct students in above practices and procedures. Assist the veterinarian in complying with current published guidelines and regulations for health and safety practices as required by Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA), United States Dept. of Agriculture (USDA), California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW), California Occupational Hazard Agency (CALOSHA), and the State of California Veterinary Board. Update and maintain animal medical records in a manner that meets all regulatory requirements and oversee assigned students who print and file medical records. E
Work collaboratively and professionally with faculty, staff, students, and stakeholders from diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, gender identity, and ethnic communities. E
Demonstrate cultural humility, sensitivity, and equity-mindedness in working with individuals from diverse communities; model inclusive behaviors; and achieve equity in assignment-related outcomes. E

Minimum Qualifications
An associate degree from a recognized college or university, preferably in veterinary technology, biology, zoology, animal husbandry, or closely related field AND three years of work experience as a zoo veterinary technician performing nursing care and handling of zoo, exotics, or wild animals in a zoo or equivalent setting.
OR
An associate degree from a recognized college or university in veterinary technology, biology, zoology, animal husbandry, or closely related field AND two years of work experience in the care and handling of zoo, exotics, or wild animals in a zoo or equivalent setting AND two years of work experience in veterinary nursing as a veterinary technician.
OR
An associate degree from a recognized college or university in exotic animal training management, zoo animal technology, or closely related field with coursework in the immediate handling and care of zoo, exotics, or wild animals AND two years of work experience in veterinary nursing as a veterinary technician.
LICENSES AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS
Applicants not possessing a current valid Registered Veterinary Technician license from the California State Veterinary Medical Association must have a Registered Veterinary Technician or equivalent license and receive a valid Registered Veterinary Technician license from the California State Veterinary Medical Association prior to completion of the probationary period.

EXAMINATION AND SELECTION PROCESS:

TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE (T&E) EVALUATION:
A T&E is an assessment of training and experience, beyond the minimum requirements, that has prepared the candidate for the position as evidenced in the application materials. Please be sure to answer every component of each supplemental question as your responses will be scored and serve as your score on the training and experience (T&E) evaluation.
The candidates with the highest passing scores on the T&E will be invited to the technical interview.
TECHNICAL INTERVIEW DATE RANGE AND LOCATION:
Date Range: Tuesday, October 29, 2024 – Monday November 4, 2024.
Location: The Technical Interview will be conducted remotely, using Zoom. To participate, you must have access to a computer with a camera, microphone, speakers, and a reliable connection to the internet.
The examination components and dates are subject to change as needs dictate. All communication regarding this process will be delivered via email.

ELIGIBILITY LIST:
Upon completion of the examination, the eligibility list will be compiled by combining the final examination score with applicable seniority and veteran’s credits, if any. The candidates will be ranked according to their total score on the eligibility list. Certification will be made from the highest three ranks of the eligibility list. This eligibility list will be used to fill current vacancies for up to one year from the date of the technical interview.
PROBATIONARY PERIOD:All regular appointments made from eligibility lists for initial appointment or for promotion, with certain exceptions, shall be probationary for a period of six (6) months or one hundred thirty (130) days of paid service, whichever is longer. Classified management, police, and designated executive classifications shall be probationary for a period of one (1) year of paid service from initial appointment or promotion.
