Job Description:

The Musical Director oversees the Harmonizing Grace Gospel choir and serves as worship leader for weekly Protestant worshiping in Manning Chapel. These tasks are linked but are two separate professional areas of oversight. The Musical Director provides oversight and administration for the annual program of performance and practice for Harmonizing Grace Gospel Choir and works weekly to plan and provide music for the Protestant service, where the choir will perform periodically. Work on Sundays is required.

The Musical Director is responsible for the development and preservation of a first-class collegiate gospel choir, including a deep collaboration in this work to augment our historic engagement in Brown’s partnership with Tougaloo College. This role has the responsibility to enrich and strengthen our institutional exchange and shared resources. Recruits, arranges, and leads performances for vocal and instrumental music based on the needs of the Protestant community and with the vocal ensemble known as Harmonizing Grace-a vocal ensemble open to Brown and RISD students without audition.

Harmonizing Grace is a free-standing group and collaborates regularly with the Protestant worshiping community; it also offers an annual set of performances; and collaborates with the Office of Institutional Equity and Inclusion (OIED) and the Brown Tougaloo Partnership.

Note: This is a part time, approximately 15-18 hour per week assignment for 9 months per year.

Job Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Arts in Music is preferred.
  • Must have previous experience directing and performing in in choirs and/or groups.
  • Director should have three to five years conducting ensembles and/or directing choirs.
  • Must be able to work with students from diverse and non-traditional musical backgrounds as the choir is open to all students from various vocal abilities and from all cultural backgrounds.
  • Basic music theory and piano skills required.
  • Possesses a willingness and ability to support a diverse and inclusive campus community
