Description:
The Design School welcomes applications for an Associate or Full Professor who will also serve in the administrative appointment of Associate Director for The Design School at Arizona State University. The Associate Director will oversee academic programs and help us place design justice and cultural inclusivity at the core of all our academic endeavors. Both the faculty position and the administrative appointment are academic-year appointments beginning in August 2025. Additional summer duties and appointments may be offered. This is a full-time, tenure-eligible position that will serve The Design School on the Tempe campus.

The Design School is committed to creating inclusive spaces that welcome and decolonize design education. In the next several years, we are conducting faculty searches to help us achieve this goal. We seek colleagues who can contribute, within their design field, to justice, health and sustainability, and work across our school’s disciplines. We are especially interested in applicants who are dedicated to advancing the ASU Charter and realizing ASU’s Design Aspirations.
Essential Duties:
The Associate Director for The Design School will work closely with the Director and school leaders to help shape initiatives, policies, and procedures that support the success of the students, faculty, and staff. In this position, the associate director will:
- Provide advice to the school director and develop processes that connect the ASU Charter and Design Aspirations with the organizational culture and operations of The Design School.
- Oversee academic affairs, manage academic planning, analyze enrollment data, and determine the effectiveness of initiatives.
- Work with faculty and staff to transform design pedagogies, create new degrees, and assess and adjust curriculum, including online and summer programs.
- Oversee class scheduling, teaching and research assistantships, and scholarships.
- Support the academic journey of our students.
- Advocate for social and environmental justice in design.
- Uplift and respect a wide breadth of experiences and knowledges among faculty, staff, and students.
- Teach one course per semester, as needed, in one of The Design School’s degree programs.
Required Qualifications:
The successful candidate is required to possess:
- A terminal degree (e.g., MArch, MLA, MFA, MDes, PhD) in one of the design disciplines or a related discipline. Degree must be completed by start of the appointment.
- Demonstrated excellence in teaching.
- Demonstrated excellence as a researcher or practitioner in one of the design disciplines.
- Demonstrated ability to build consensus and cultivate collaborative teams.
- Knowledge of management and supervisory principles and practices.
Desired Qualifications:
Preference will be given to individuals with:
- A futures-oriented view of the design disciplines.
- A nationally recognized program of research and creative work
- Ability to develop cross-campus partnerships.
- Knowledge of principles and practices pertaining to managing a large and varied set of academic programs.
- Successful experience in facilitating innovative curriculum development.
- Evidence of success collaborating with faculty and academic leaders in multiple disciplines.
- Knowledge of strategic planning principles and practices.
