Job Description:
The Research Scientist at the School of Public Health is a staff position in research administration responsible for execution of research under the direction of one or more principal investigators. The incumbent will devise, formulate, and execute investigative protocols and disseminate findings through presentations and publications. The incumbent will also provide consultative services in the area of qualitative data collection and analytic methods.
With this Research Scientist position, we seek candidates with qualitative methods and analytic skills to support faculty-directed grants and contracts. In particular, we seek individuals with research skills and experience involving patient, client and community-focused approaches, including qualitative methods (e.g., individual interviews and focus groups), survey design and development, qualitative data collection in clinic and community settings, medical record review and extraction, and/or participatory research. We have an active portfolio of health policy, intervention, and pharmacoepidemiologic projects, as well as other health services research projects.
The position will work closely with The Center for Gerontology & Healthcare Research. The Center has been foundational for over two decades as a locus for health services research on vulnerable populations, and aging and long-term care, partnering with academic and research units across the Brown University campus and with external research partners from other universities, professional organizations, policy makers, and the National Institutes on Aging and other National Institutes of Health. In calendar year 2021, the Center’s research funding exceeded $30 million. The CGHCR has an international reputation for large-scale research projects built with a vast collection of primary and secondary data and rigorous, and contemporary methodologies.
Education and Experience
Doctoral Degree and 4-6 years’ experience or equivalent combination of education and experience in qualitative and/or survey methods.
Job Competencies
- Proficiency and demonstrated experience in qualitative research and quasi-experiential designs.
- Proficiency in open science framework, including topics such as the need for registration of pre-analysis plans.
- Expertise in at least one (1) statistical programming language (i.e., R, Python, Stata, SAS, or similar).
- Strong communication skills, in both written and verbal formats, and including under short deadlines.
- Strong interpersonal skills, including the ability to develop and maintain relationships with a diverse range of partnerships
- Excellent technical skills
- Must understand the purpose for and reactions constituting the experiments being performed.
- Ability to independently carry out experiments and deviate from protocols when necessary
- Willingness to take instruction and training in specific techniques
- Individual must understand general goals for experiments
- Must be able to accurately write and report experimental data
- Must be observant and self-motivated, able to think critically and problem solve.
- The position requires highly developed time management skills
- Possess a willingness and ability to support and promote a diverse and inclusive campus community
This is a fixed term position with a current end date of 12/31/2025, which may be extended based upon available funding.
