Robert Q. Berry III to Lead School of Education at Indiana University

Robert Q. Berry III has been named dean of the School of Education at Indiana University Bloomington. He will begin his new position on April 1, 2025.

Currently, Dr. Berry serves as the Paul L. Lindsey and Kathy J. Alexander Chair and dean of the College of Education at the University of Arizona, a position he has held since 2022. Previously, he spent 17 years on the faculty at the University of Virginia School of Education and Human Development. He worked his way through the academic ranks, culminating in his appointment as the Samuel Braley Gray Professor of Mathematics Education and associate dean of diversity, equity, and inclusion.

Throughout his career, Dr. Berry’s scholarship has focused on equity issues in mathematics education. He has conducted extensive research on Black children’s mathematics experiences, standards-based teaching practices, social justice issues within teaching and learning, and the interaction of technology and mathematics education. His expertise led him to developing Mathematics Scan, an observation instrument for mathematics classrooms. He also currently serves as the immediate past-president of the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics.

Dr. Berry received his bachelor’s degree in education from Old Dominion University in Norfolk, Virginia, master’s degree in mathematics education from Christopher Newport University in Virginia, and Ph.D. in education from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
