Two Black Women to Lead Academic Affairs at Colleges

Chawne Kimber has been named vice president for academic affairs and dean of faculty at Pitzer College in Claremont, California. She will begin her new role on July 1.

Currently, Dr. Kimber serves as dean of the college and professor of mathematics at Washington and Lee University in Virginia. Earlier, she was head of the department of mathematics at Lafayette College in Easton, Pennsylvania. Her scholarship focuses on abstract algebra and functional analysis. She is also an internationally recognized quilter whose art explores themes of race, identity, and activism.

Dr. Kimber holds a bachelor’s degree and Ph.D. in mathematics from the University of Florida and a master’s degree in mathematics from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

Anita Thomas has been appointed provost of Meredith College in Raleigh, North Carolina. Her appointment is effective immediately.

Most recently, Dr. Thomas served as president of North Central College in Illinois from July 2023 to July 2024. She was the college’s first woman and first person of color to hold the position. Earlier in her career, she was the executive vice president and provost of St. Catherine University in St. Paul, Minnesota. An academic psychologist, she studies racial identity, identity socialization, and using culturally affirming counseling approaches with African American families.

Dr. Thomas is a graduate of Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois, where she majored in education and social policy. She holds a master’s degree in community counseling and a doctorate in counseling psychology from Loyola University Chicago.
