Vanderbilt University Partners With Tennessee State University for Sports Medicine Training

Historically Black Tennessee State University (TSU) and Vanderbilt University Medical Center (VUMC) have announced a new partnership to provide TSU students studying human performance and sports sciences (HPSS) with direct access to clinical training opportunities at VUMC.

Through the Nashville-based universities’ new agreement, Vanderbilt has pledged to host semester-long clinical immersions designed to give HPSS students the hands-on experience needed for successful careers in athletic training and other sports medicine fields. This will include direct learning from VUMC’s athletic training staff on the sidelines of Vanderbilt athletic events. Additionally, students at the HBCU will benefit from specialized advising and guidance to prepare them for admission into Vanderbilt’s master’s degree program in athletic training.

“The professionalism demonstrated by the team at Vanderbilt University Medical Center throughout this process has been exceptional,” said Jason Smith, chair of the HPSS department and associate professor of pedagogy and sports leadership at TSU. “This agreement enhances the growing legacy of Tennessee State University’s human performance and sports sciences department, aligning it with the nation’s premier universities and medical centers.”
